Lore: Global Temperatures Rising Out of Control
'Protect Your Skin and Eyes' article #1 & #2
The below is an article relating to a future RPG project, Protect Your Skin and Eyes. From time to time I’ll be releasing in-world articles explaining why things got so bad in the game world. I’m not a climate scientist and I’m making it all up. I’m aiming for realistic-adjacent here and not scientific fact.
Global Temperatures Rising Out of Control
International Scientists raise the alarm at the 2028 Climate Science Conference
- The International Press-
1 July, 2028 Stockholm, Sweden
A global conference of climate scientists have raised grave concerns about the state of the world environment. Conference Chair, Christof Aberg, spent his closing remarks laying out proof for temperature rises exceeding all past projections.
“If we don’t stop our runaway consumption and consumerism, global temperatures may rise several times above previously projected rates. The world our future generations inherit will be drastically worse off than the one today. Sea level rises alone will change and degrade living conditions across every costal city in the world. Billions will become displaced. We call on all world governments to step forward and pledge greater funding to climate remediation programs and greater regulation on polluting industries.”
Not everyone is taking away such a worst case scenario from the data. Silicon Valley researcher Jeffery Smock says that climate change doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom.
“Sure we have challenges but one thing we are great at doing in Silicon Valley is taking the impossible and doing it. There are a number of technologies on the drawing board that would help mitigate or even reverse the effects of climate change. Technologies such as new solar panel technology and desalination may help communities adapt to the new world. And other more theoretical technology like carbon capture may start reversing the damage. I’m really excited about nano-technology, there is so much promise there.”
When asked about the economic and societal challenges of adapting to the new technologies, Jeffery became even more excited.
“That’s the thing! These new technologies open up new industries for investment and profit. The climate research scientists all talk about reducing consumption which will slow our economy and put people out of work. But by investing in these new technologies we can spread prosperity across the globe and protect the environment. Isn’t that a win-win?”
Jeffery is asked if there is anything in particular he is excited about. He smiles.
“Of course there are. But I can’t talk about it just yet. Non-Disclosure Agreement and all that jazz. Hopefully soon!”
Projections of doom and disaster from Sweden and projections of hope and optimism from Silicon Valley. Both sides of the debate are quite passionate that their vision of the future is the correct one. Only time will tell.
Press Release - United States Department of Innovation
- Offical Press Release-
5 July, 2028 Washington D.C. United States
Department of Innovation Under-Secretary Harrison is honoured to today announce the creation of the Environmental Innovation Fund, a public/private partnership that will foster innovation in environmental remediation and adaptability. This multi-billion dollar fund will back winners and continue the United States unparalleled streak in technological innovation.
The Environmental Innovation Fund will focus on start-up companies inventing new technologies that will allow the United States to continue economic development, while adapting, reversing or even taking advantage of the changes in the environment.
“This is a new day in innovation and this new fund will continue the United States exceptionalism in a new industry. While this Administration doesn’t support the consensus that climate change exists or is man-made, we do understand that some changes in isolated local climates create a huge opportunity for private business to thrive and increase profits.” Under-Secretary Harrison stated at the opening of the new fund.
Awarding of investment funding will be done ‘under confidence’ and will not be open to the general public.
Blinker Post from User AllSux34 - 7 July 2028
When I was a kid it snowed on Halloween sometimes. I hasn’t snowed in November since 2020 and last year we didn’t get a snow flake until January. Things are changing.
Response from User GrumsFace - 7 July 2028
You sound like a lib-drone dude. It’s just weather. Some years are hot and some are cold. DO YOUR RESEARCH!
Response from AllSux34 - 7 July 2028
Do my research? My brother in Christ it is 115f outside and it will be over 110 for the whole week. That’s my research. This ain’t normal I'm telling you!
